Facebook has been in the news quite a bit recently as it has been causing problems for school teachers and cheerleading coaches alike; now the social networking giant has come under fire from an Archbishop, who has attacked all social networking websites and the Internet as a whole.
Archbishop Vincent Nichols has attacked the Internet, social networking and email as causing young people to seek ‘more’ friends instead of creating genuine ones. He claims that the Internet is affecting community life in a negative way.
He also blames transient friendships forged on the Internet are to blame for suicides.
According to Archbishop Vincent Nichols, today’s young are losing basic skills in communication as a result of their dependence on social networking websites and emails. Using the Internet in such a way ‘dehumanises’ relationships, he claims.
He commented:
Facebook and MySpace might contribute towards communities, but I’m wary about it.
Among young people often a key factor in their committing suicide is the trauma of transient relationships.
They throw themselves into a friendship or network of friendships, then it collapses and they’re desolate.
It’s an all-or-nothing syndrome that you have to have in an attempt to shore up an identity; a collection of friends about whom you can talk and even boast.
