How much should I pay for SEO?

Written by Cheryl Mathews

With so many different websites offering SEO search engine optimisation Search Engine Optimisation search engine optimisation (SEO SEO Search Engine Optimisation SEO), it can be difficult to know which one offers the best service for the best price. As with most things that we buy, whether for our personal lives or in business, cost is always an issue (as it should be) and we’re not going to pay over the odds for something just because it’s being offered from a flashy website, or from a company that comes with a reputation.

So with that in mind, how much should you pay for SEO services? If you look around the Internet at different SEO companies you’ll find that prices for SEO can vary wildly, with some companies offering to SEO your website for thousands of pounds each month, down to the one-man-bands who offer you SEO for peanuts.

The problem is of course that much of what an SEO specialist does for you is unseen, so you have no real way of knowing whether spending £5,000 or £50 will yield better results.

The real question you should ask yourself is what is the SEO worth to you?

If ranking #1 in Google for most of your chosen keywords is likely to help your company earn an extra £50,000 each month, then you can realistically assume that someone offering you SEO for £50 per month isn’t going to be able to achieve the results you need. If they could, they’d be doing your business themselves!

If however your website is only likely to earn you an extra £50 per month by ranking #1 in Google for your chosen keywords, you would be foolish to spend any more than that on SEO.

You should also keep in mind that any company that offers you a price for SEO without enquiring about your industry, the status of your website or the nature of your competition, is unlikely to be successful with your Internet marketing. Companies that have ‘fixed’ prices for SEO, regardless of the nature of their clients, can’t expect to successfully achieve rankings.

For example, a website in the landscape gardening sector would most likely require a lower SEO budget than a website in the finance sector.

The simple rule of thumb is that you should pay however much you can afford for your SEO services, based on how much better rankings would be worth to you.
