Take advantage of downtime

Written by Darren Jamieson

Updating your website with content is one of the best ways of increasing its search engine rankings, and achieving more traffic. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find the time to write content for your website, especially if you want to be writing regularly (which you should). Scheduling the time as a business owner can often be impossible, so this is why, if you intend to write your own content, you should take advantage of downtime.

When we say downtime, we don’t mean the 1997 British movie starring Paul McGann, that was dubbed (on the poster at least) the “British Die Hard”. Rather than being the UK’s answer to the classic Bruce Willis action movie, Downtime was a rather dull, little seen movie that saw the former Doctor Who actor getting stuck in the lift when some teenagers vandalised an urban block of flats. Hardly the thrills and spills offered by the John McTiernan directed classic that spawned 3 sequels.

No, we’re not talking about that downtime; we’re talking about the sort of downtime you get when you find yourself waiting around for something, such as a plane, train or for a meeting (bet you thought we were going to say automobile then didn’t you?). When you find yourself with some downtime you should take advantage of it by writing content for your website, as often the fact that you’re waiting around will inspire you to write more freely about whatever is going through your mind, businesswise of course.

You could even write about the importance of using your downtime more productively, as I am doing right now as I await a conference call. You see, rather than sit around in the office wondering if I have enough time to begin a project, or make some amends to a website, or even delve into an SEO SEO Search Engine Optimisation SEO report, I know I can pick up where I left off on the last bit of writing that I was doing and, when I am needed, I can leave it for another time.

If you don’t happen to be in the office you can ensure that you’re able to make the most of your downtime by carrying a laptop with you. It doesn’t have to be a top of the range one with Wi-Fi connectivity and it doesn’t need to be an iPad (unless you really want one) – just something you can use to write with will be sufficient, and it’ll pay for itself with the time you save and the positive effects your additional writing have on your website.

So, when you next have downtime (again, not the truly awful Paul McGann movie) make sure you utilise it productively and that your website benefits.
