Top Ten UK retail websites for 2009

Written by Matt Jones

Online retail is every bit as competitive as offline retail with the big names in the online world battling it out for customers. With that, Internet research company Hitwise has published its list of the top UK retail websites for 2009, three years after the list was first published, and little seems to have changed.

When Amazon launched in 1996 it quickly established itself as the dominant online retailer, and now, 13 years later it’s still top dog. As well as Amazon, a further five of the brands that were top ten in 2006 are still there lauding it over the rest of the UK ecommerce world. In addition, four of the top ten have high street stores attached to them, one more than in 2006.

That shows that you don’t need a high street presence to win the online retail battle.

Some losers in the top shops list are sites in the travel sector, as the credit crunch hits people’s pockets hard, and their ability to go abroad for their holidays.

The top ten of UK online retailers looks like this:

  1. Amazon UK www.amazon.co.uk
  2. Argos www.argos.co.uk
  3. Play.com www.play.com
  4. Amazon.com www.amazon.com
  5. Tesco.com www.tesco.com
  6. Marks & Spencer www.marksandspencer.com
  7. Epson UK www.epson.co.uk
  8. Expedia.co.uk www.expedia.co.uk
  9. Next www.next.co.uk
  10. ASOS www.asos.com
